Salon shampoos contain a bigger proportion of high-grade ingredients that protect and nourish the hair, and less of the ones that strip the hair of its natural strength.

Soduim Lauryl Sulfates (SLS) / Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)
Sulfates are a chemical used as a cleansing agent found in household cleaners, degergents and even shampoo. The purpose is to create a lather, and while your hair might feel clean it can also be left brittle, dry and stripped of colour.
Silicones
Silicone helps smooth the hair and give it shine, sounds amazing yeah? Well actually no! because what it actually does is give the hair a false smooth and shine finish by coating the hair in a plastic like coating. This acts as a barrier, preventing nourishing ingredients from penetrating the hair. Over time this will lead to dry brittle hair and can cause hair to weaken and break.
Parabens
What are parabens and why are they in so many shampoos? Well parabens are essentially another word for preservatives. Preservatives are required to give shampoo a shelf life, allowing them to survive for months or sometimes years.
In 2014, a British study found traces of five parabens in the breast tissue of 19 out of 20 women studied. This did not prove that parabens cause cancer but identified that the parabens were able to penetrate the skin and remain in the tissue. Parabens also impact the environment, it has been reported that parabens have been found in marine mammals. Researchers believe it's likely these parabens come from product we use that have made it into the ocean.
